冷/热水机组输送的介质通常为水或者乙二醇溶液。其工作原理是由室外主机产生空调冷/热水，经过管路系统输送到各个室内区域的末端装置，在末端装置上冷/热水浴室内空气进行热量交换，吹出冷/热风，从而达到调控室内温度。

家用中央空调常见类型之一：多联机系统

多联机系统也称作制冷剂系统，其是通过压缩制冷剂为输送介质，采用一台室外机带动多台室内机，制冷剂通过管路由室外机进入室内机，通过控制管路中制冷剂流入室内机的流量来控制室内散热器的制冷量，以此满足不同房间区域对温湿度的要求。同时还可以通过变频器控制压缩机转速，根据室内需求调节室外机的制冷量。
